I like being a wizard. I like being able to speak spells, to weave complex patterns of logic that make things happen in the world. Writing code is a way to manifest my will.
Yes, I've piled up a lot of arcane knowledge over the 20+ years I've been doing this. But forms of invocation come and go. What started with Visual Basic moved to C++, then Java, then JavaScript, then Go. It's been about 20 years since I needed to use Visual Basic, but I certainly don't miss it.
My goal has always been simple: make computers do what I want. To be a person who's good at assuming the kind of mental states required to bend reality with the application of spells. To me, it doesn't matter if the spells are painstakingly carved in runes or spoken to an obedient machine. It's all the manifestation of will.
How we invoke our will comes and goes. Practices appear, diminish, and get replaced by more powerful ones. But us? We're the magic-wielders. Without us, none of it happens.
So study the fundamentals and learn how to use the new wand.
